My Biggest Management Problem…
I think right now I have a hell of hard time managing to work with others, specifically the group members that my professors assigned. I hate doing group works because you can never be assigned to the responsible group members. I tried to contact everybody so we can get start on these dreadful and overwhelming projects, but nobody seems to cooperate with me. Either they have no response or no time. I know everybody has their own things going on but this is still a part of our grades, and I don’t want to risk my grades with their irresponsibility.
The worst part of it is that the professors don’t care, all they ever say is that this is how it would be like working for big companies; random assigned groups and you have to work everything out yourself, and then they throw you a big deadline regardless how things might go wrong. If this is how big companies are like I rather not choose to go into that path. I put a lot of effort in my works, why should my performance be judged by other people’s failure. College or companies should not evaluate students or employees based on ability to work in groups. I tried, and as much as I wanted to I cannot manage to deal with people that don’t care.

I know exactly how you feel. I am the kind of person who would rather work alone then in any group...even in a group of my friends. I don't like trusting other people with work that has an affect on my grade because I work very hard for my grade. Also, since not all students have the same mentality as I do, it is even harder to get people to cooperate. I'm working on a number of group projects now and i'm having a difficult time just getting contact information from people so i can only imagine what getting actual work done is going to be like. The best group work i've done is when the professor grades each person individually, I think that's how it should be done otherwise there are going to be slackers who are going to get the same grade as you and did absolutely no work.
I know exactly what you are talking about from my prevoius experiences. Doing group project canbe pain in the .... However, group project is good for leadership skill. Moreover, you will have to work with many different types of people at your job(s).
It could be that it is very early of the semester for some students to start doing group project. If you are so eager to start your group project be the leader. collect all of your group members phone #s and E-mail addresses. Talk to them in the class room what you think about the project(s). You will find at least a few of the group members are willing to start early as you are. Then make a schedule to meet with all the members of the group. In the meeting assing everybody differnet part of the project, and tell them that you will help if they need. Also, set the next date you are meeting. If someone does not show up in the first meeting, you and other group mmbers will be able to contact that member, and let that persons know what thay are responsible for.
If it still doesn't work, with the other members of the group inform the profrssor. I know some professors take that matter seriously.
I too understand how you feel. It is frustrating to feel like you're the only one that wants to get the project done. It so easy work alone rather than to work in a group because you can get the job done when you want. But alas, this is not how the corporate world works. Every company out there is looking for teamwork. Working as a group develops communication skills, time management skills and leadership skills. These can be of great benefit to you in the future so try to learn from your experiences and use them to your advantage.
I wrote about the exact same thing in my entry.
Not only is it frustrating to have to gather everybody together at one time, it's even worse when there are some group members that aren't willing to do the work. The project reflects all group members and you don't want to do poorly just because of other people.
So I completely understand what you are going through with this. One of my professors posted up the group member sheet like 2 weeks ago, I still haven't had a chance to meet with 2 of those people. Oh lord.
Well, Good luck to you.
Working in group can be a bad experience, but I think as business students, it is something we are often exposed to. Most classes at Baruch require some type of group work, so hating it I think is not a good alternative.
Rather, I think that since most students have crazy schedules since they often go to school and work, group members should use blackboard, emails, and telephone to prepare their work and stay in touch. That way, the group members will only meet when necessary to finalize the work or rehears in case of a presentation to be given.
In other words, with a beat of flexibility and realistic planning, frustrations in a group work can be avoided or minimized, and group projects can be better experiences.
I know what you're talking about. The same problem happens to me especially now since most of the business courses are communication intensive which means they're a lot of group presentations to be done. But I don't think there's much to be done. I don't mean to be pessimistic about it but you're meeting with your group members for one semester and it's really not long enough to develop a relationship where everyone in the group would care about someone else. But as the time gets closer to the due date, everyone will start rushing to do their part. By then, you should have done your part and will be able to incorporate their parts with yours. And since you're the one who will be done with the most at that time, you should take on the role as the leader and then make sure your group does what it needs to.
